Home PageTHE PLAYOFF RACE GETS TIGHTER IN THE EAST!
As the playoff picture, in the G.L.J.H.L's Eastern Division, get more complex, the action gets hotter. Currently there is only five points seperating the top three teams! The Motor City Chiefs find themselves atop the division with 46 points, but breathing down their necks are the ever tough Michigan Ice Dogs, at 44 points. Not far behind them are the Wooster Oilers with 41 points. The Oilers split their series with the Chiefs this past weekend, winning with authority on Saturday evening and fought hard in Sunday's loss. Earlier in the season, the Oilers beat the Ice Dogs in their arena, two games straight, but loss both games by one goal recently. So what does all this mean? To the hockey gurus watching the Great Lakes Junior Hockey League this season, it looks like anyone can beat anyone else on any given day! " This is fantastic for the league." commented G.L.J.H.L president Gerry Lullove. " The same scenario is shaping up in the West also. The level of competition keeps growing year after year, which makes this league more and more competitive. What's better for junior hockey fans than knowing any team can defeat any other team on any given night?" the president concluded. The Oilers will enjoy the upcoming weekend off to prepare for the Ice Dogs, which will be coming to the Alice Noble Ice Arena to fight for playoff spots, on February the 3rd and 4th. Watch this website for further details about upcoming events!!! OILERS WIN THREE GAMES IN THREE DAYS!!!It is becoming obvious that the Wooster Oilers are actually starting to like playing in the state of Michigan! The Oilers have dominated their Michigan rivals, so far, in the 2011 - 2012 season. The trend continued this past weekend as the Oilers began their three day - three game Michigan trip in Kalkaska. This game proved to be what the Oilers thought it may be. A tough contest that saw the Oilers crew trailing by a 3 to 1 score at the end of the first period. The boys from Wooster had trouble losing their "bus legs" and seemed a step behind the Roughnecks, throughout the opening frame. But as they have done all year, the Oilers re-grouped between periods and came back with speed and great puck movement. When the ice chips settled, the Oilers would have run off four unanswered goals in the third period, to win the contest by a score of 6 to 3! Oilers captain Kyle Althen had 2 goals and forward Billy Blanset had a 4 point evening. The Oilers were outshot by a 39 to 33 margin, but backstop Alex Batson came up big when called upon. The drive south, through Michigan, on Saturday morning, brought the team to Bay City Michigan for games two and three of the weekend trek. The hosts for the next two games would the Tri City IceHawks. The Saturday evening contest saw the Oilers pummel the IceHawks with 55 shots and take command of the game early. The final score would be 9 to 4 for the Oilers. The highlights of this contest were that Oilers forward Billy Blanset not only notched a hat trick but ended up with 6 points on the evening. Kyle Althen was also on the scoreboard again, as he added two goals and had 4 points. Oilers goaltender Taylor Kuhn chipped into the result by getting his first junior hockey win between the pipes! With a tiring Oilers team taking the ice again in Bay City Michigan on Sunday afternoon, the result was much the same. The Oilers ended up outshooting their hosts by a 47 to 35 margin and skating away with a 8 to 1 win. In this final event of a three game weekend, forward Alex Harris scored twice along with his teammate Ian Reffert, that also found the back of the net twice. Oilers rookie Chris Carpenter scored his first junior goal. Oilers netminder Ryan Wickiser had a good afternoon turning away 34 shots to nail down the victory. As a result of the weekend scoring, Oilers captain Kyle Althen, now finds himself tied for first place in the scoring race in the Great Lakes Junior Hockey League. The Oilers find themselves one point behind the red hot Motor City Chiefs in the standings in the Eastern Division. The Oilers will now return to the Alice Noble Ice Arena, this weekend, to play hosts to the very tough Fort Wayne Federals. Game time Saturday night will be 8:15 p.m. with warm-ups at 7:45 p.m. Stay tuned to this website for more details this week! OILERS SPLIT ON HOME OPENING WEEKEND!If you didn't know the building that you were sitting in this weekend, an Oilers fan may have thought they were watching a different team on Sunday, than they saw Saturday night! To a big opening night crowd the Oilers did not disappoint their faithful fans. The Indianapolis Inferno were the team visiting the Alice Noble Ice Arena, for the Oilers to kick off their home season. The Oilers squad were relentless as they came out hard and found the back of the Indianapolis net nine times! The Inferno scored a single goal on a 5 on 3 power play to make the final 9 to 1 for the home team. Oilers marksmen were captain Kyle Althen as he ended up with 2 goals and 4 points on the evening. Forward Ian Reffert found his scoring touch as he also had 2 goals and 3 points on the night. Braden Smith scored his first junior goal. Sunday saw the two Great Lakes Junior Hockey League teams go at it again. The home Oilers looked disinterested for most of the game allowing the Inferno to control the pace. It was obvious from the outset that the Indianapolis team had come to play and that the Oilers team were goiing to live on their victory from the night before. It took until late in the third period until the Oilers seemed to want the two points that were at stake in this game. With less than a minute remaining in the game the boys from Wooster, with their net empty, tied up the game at 3 to 3. It looked like overtime until a full team breakdown in the defensive zone turned the puck over to the Inferno and they scored to skate away with the 4 to 3 win. The bright spot for the Oilers was rookie Preston Hagerman, that continues to be the workhorse for this season's Wooster team. He was finally rewarded with his first junior goal! " I'm not sure when this team will learn that the game is sixty minutes long. It's getting very old to the staff that this team cannot find the intensity to take the ice...even in front of their home fans. We will find out what the problem is, in this locker room, and fix it as soon as possible. The sooner this team learns that playing within their comfort zone is unacceptable, the quicker this will come together. Some guys are busting their humps while some guys are spectators." commented Oilers Head Coach Hart Duddy, following Sunday's game. The Oilers have a weekend off before returning to action on October the 15th at 7:15 p.m. as they host the St. Louis Frontenacs. CHICAGO BULLDOGS DOWN OILERS IN GAME TWOFor the first time in the young Great Lakes Junior Hockey League season, the Oilers have dropped back to back games, to a very talented Chicago Bulldogs hockey team. The final score of Saturday's contest was 5 to 2. The Oilers were outshot 47 to 21 and once again could not get anything going offensively until late in the contest. Young Oilers netminder Ryan Wickiser kept the Ohio squad in the game early until his teammates found their stride. Jonathon Stanfield and Josh Turkaly found the back of the net for the Oilers. " I'm not going to blame the schedule or anything else, to our slow starts these past two days" stated Oilers Head Coach Hart Duddy. " It is my job to get these guys mentally prepared to play each game. We simply haven't been ready to compete, early on. Against a top team like Chicago, we cannot spot them three goals and expect to win. The boys have to step up and when they leave the locker room and head to the ice, they have to know the other team will be playing hard from the drop of the first puck. I am proud of them for being able to mount an attack, late in these games, but it has been too little too late." concluded the coach. OILERS DROP GAME ONE TO BULLDOGSThe Oilers dropped the first game, of their three game series, with the Chicago Bulldogs Friday night. Once again the Oilers seemed to have no legs in the opening period, and were dominated by their opponents. As the first frame ended the Oilers found themselves behind by a 3 to 0 score. The second period found the boys from Wooster on the wrong end of a power play and the Bulldogs made the score 4 to 0. Finally it seemed the Oilers found their stride and notched their first goal of the night. After two periods they returned to the locker room down by a 4 to 1 score. The third period the Oilers were all over their hosts, and found the net again to get the contest to a 4 to 2 score. A late flurry by the Oilers could not however get the score any closer. When the buzzer sounded the Oilers had been outshot 45 to 23. Jonathon Stanfield and Kyle Althen had the two Oilers markers, with both also chipping in with assists. The two teams are back in action tonight tonight at 5:30 C.S.T CHICAGO...the next stop!
Until you have lived the road life of trying to push nine games of junior hockey into three weekends…tired does not accurately describe the feeling. Short weeks, buses, hotel rooms, fast food, buffets…it all begins to run together. The Wooster Oilers have logged hundreds and hundreds of miles the last two weekends and this one coming up will just add to that. Chicago is the next stop in the month of September, for the Oilers. This weekend they will play three more games away from home. Are the boys complaining? The answer to that is… no! It has been a team building exercise, taken to the extreme!!! Other sports teams have a day or two together to get to know one another, while the Oilers have had days and days and miles and miles to become a family. This showed last weekend in Michigan as they already showed that “never give up” attitude that coaches look for, after months of playing together. “We took lemons and made them into lemonade I guess” commented Oilers Head Coach Hart Duddy. “The schedule was put together, this way, for a number of different reasons. The whole organization has made it work wonderfully. The guys are bonding and we are working out our personality kinks that sometimes teams take months to get through. Sitting at 4 and 2, and heading into Chicago, suits us just fine. Last weekend in Michigan over 100 of our fans showed up…that’s what I call road support!” concluded the coach. The Oilers fans will get to finally cheer on their boys, at home, on October the 1st and 2nd, as the Oilers will get to their home opening weekend against the Indianapolis Inferno. Watch the Oilers website for information. OILERS WIN THREE GAMES IN THREE DAYS...TAKE OVER FIRST PLACE IN THE EAST!!!The Wooster Oilers hit the road again this past weekend, on their second long trip, of three, in the month of September. Kalkaska Michigan was their first stop on Friday night, to take on the host Kalkaska Roughnecks. The Oilers showed early signs of bus legs but continued to press through and down their hosts by a 6 to 4 final. Jaron Smith continued his assault on The Great Lakes Junior Hockey League, by scoring twice again and notching two assists. On Saturday the boys from Ohio headed south, through Michigan, towards Detroit, to take on their rivals, from last season, the Michigan Ice Dogs. As the Oilers took the ice, they were pleasantly surprised to see the stands filled with Oilers fans, that had made the trip to watch their team play! They would not disappoint their faithful. In what can only be described as a tough and physical contest, the Oilers would not be stopped, as they won game one by a 3 to 1 final. Forwards Alex Harris and Tyler Williams found the net for the first time, in the young season. The Oilers players knew that Sunday’s affair was not going to get any easier for them. The Ice Dogs came out hard again and enticed the Oilers to take penalties, that looked like it may cost them the game. But the young Oilers team righted the ship between the second and third periods and came out flying, in the third. They dominated their opponents and not only tied the game but went on to defeat the Ice Dogs by a 5 to 4 final! Oilers Alex Harris, Tyler Williams, Jaron Smith, Ian Reffert and captain Kyle Althen, all scored in the winning cause. The month of September does not get any easier, as the team heads off to the windy city of Chicago, on Friday, to take on the Chicago Bulldogs, for three games in three days. The Bulldogs are currently in second place, in the Western Division, with a perfect 4 and 0 record. First game is slated for Friday night at 8 p.m. c.s.t OILERS HEAD TO MICHIGAN FOR 3 GAMES!The Oilers extensive road trip, for the month of September, continues as the take to Interstate 75, for a three game weekend. The action will begin on Friday night as the Oilers will head into Kalkaska Michigan, to engage the newest team in the Great Lakes Junior Hockey League, the Kalkaska Roughnecks. The boys in blue take their 1 and 2 record into Kalkaska looking to establish themselves in the always tough Eastern Division. Game time is 8:05 p.m. and can be viewed on FastHockey.
After the Friday night affair, the Oilers will travel back south to the house of the Michigan Ice Dogs. Oilers fans, from last season, will remember the Ice Dogs were the squad that eliminated the Wooster Oilers from the playoffs last year, with a controversal call and lapse of time on the time clock. The new edition of the Oilers are fully aware that they need to make amends for last season's team. Game times for the Ice Dogs games are 8:20 p.m. on Saturday and 1:20 p.m.. on Sunday. Tune into FastHockey to catch the action! OILERS RE-GROUP TO WIN GAME TWO!What can only be described as a "gritty and determined" comeback, after a humiliating defeat that night before, the Oilers re-grouped and downed the Rampage by a 6 to 2 final, Saturday night, in Pleasant Prairie Wisconsin. Oilers rookies were at the top of the scoring list again as Michigan native Josh Ybarra tallied his first and second goals of his junior career. Also getting on the board in the goals department, for the first time in juniors, was forward Michael Branem. Young goaltender Ryan Wickiser notched his first junior win in net, stopping 28 shots, to lead the Oilers to their victory. The "rubber" match for the series goes Sunday at 1:15 C.S.T. Catch all the action on Fast Hockey! OILERS DEFEATED IN SEASON OPENERIt surely wasn't the start to the season that the Oilers staff envisioned, as they made the long bus ride to Pleasant Prairie Wisconsin, to take on the Rampage, this weekend. The Oilers went down to a fired -up Rampage team by a score of 11 to 3. " It was their home opener. We seemed to be prepared for what was coming as we dominated them the first 10 minutes of the first period" stated Oilers Head Coach Hart Duddy. " We are not going to blame the bus ride or anything else for that matter. It was our first game as new, young team and we are going to need to grow in quite a few areas. Our veteran players need to lead and be an example to our young guys. No finger pointing or looking for an excuse from the officals calls, or anything like that. We dug ourselves into a deep hole, with three of our players being ejected, during the game. The Rampage were better than we were, and we made mistakes, they wanted the two points more than we did...it's that simple. It's very very early in a long season. We will have ample opportunity to re-bound." concluded the coach. The bright spot for the Oilers, was late roster addition, Jaron Smith, who not only tallied his first junior hockey goal, but had two markers on the evening. The series resumes tonight at 7:15 p.m. C.S.T... catch the action on FastHockey.com. GO OILERS!!!! FORMER OILERS CAPTAIN SIGNS DEAL WITH THE AUGUSTA RIVERHAWKS PRO TEAM!
Former Oilers Captain and team leader of the 2009-2010 championship team, #20 Curtis Megginson, has inked a deal with the Augusta Riverhawks of the Southern Professional Hockey League. Curtis attended the Riverhawks free agent camp this weekend in Augusta Georgia, where only two, of dozens of hopefuls, were to be picked for the team, and impressed the team management enough to be offered a contract. " I knew I had to be at my best" stated Curtis in a telephone call on Sunday afternoon. " There were some pretty good players out there that had pro experience. I had to go full every shift. I felt good after yesterday, but I knew I needed to step it up even more, if I wanted a shot at pro hockey. I also knew my Grandpa was in my corner all weekend helping me from heaven" concluded the Oilers former captain. Curtis was referring to the passing of his grandfather last week in Canada as he prepared for his first professional tryout. Megginson had dedicated his tryout to his grandpa's memory. The entire Oilers organization is very proud of their former leader and wishes him nothing but the best of luck in his future endeavours in professional hockey! Oiler fans can send Curtis there best wishes THIS Saturday night, August 28th, at the Wooster Oilers 3rd Annual Blue/White Game, as Curtis will be on hand AND WILL PLAY in the inter-squad affair!
